If you are buying CBD oil for the first time in Sunshine Coast, or wondering whether a bottle you already have is still good, the key number is this: hemp-derived CBD oil typically remains within its stated composition for 12 to 24 months from the manufacture date. That window assumes the bottle is sealed, stored correctly and not left in direct sunlight — which matters more than most people realise in the Queensland climate. This page explains the chemistry behind that number and what you actually need to check on your bottle.

What gives CBD oil a shelf life?
The answer is in the ingredients.
Hemp extract — drawn from Cannabis sativa L. — contains cannabinoids such as CBD and a range of terpenes that give the oil its characteristic botanical smell. These are natural plant compounds, and natural plant compounds degrade. Three things drive that degradation: light (especially ultraviolet), heat, and oxygen. Where all three are present together — a sunny windowsill, a warm kitchen bench with the cap off — degradation accelerates. Where they are minimised — a sealed bottle in a cool, dark cupboard — it slows.
The carrier oil in our range is MCT, which is medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut. MCT is considerably more stable than hemp seed oil as a carrier, but it is still a fat, and fats oxidise when exposed to air and warmth over time. Oxidised MCT has a noticeably rancid smell — different from the clean, neutral base of a fresh bottle.
Both the extract and the carrier age, and both age faster in warm, bright or open conditions. The Sunshine Coast coastal climate, with its warm summers and high UV index, makes proper storage slightly more important than it would be in cooler, cloudier parts of Australia.
How long does our CBD oil last?
Our 50ml amber glass bottles are the format chosen for longevity, not aesthetics. Amber glass filters the ultraviolet spectrum that most aggressively breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes, while the fitted dropper cap limits oxygen entry to the moments between opening and closing during each serving.
Stored properly, the oil remains within its stated specification for 12 to 24 months from manufacture. The reference for that date is the Certificate of Analysis — the independent lab report run on each production batch before dispatch. The COA records the manufacture date, the test date, the cannabinoid concentrations (in milligrams and as a percentage), and the THC figure: under 0.3% for full-spectrum, zero for broad-spectrum.
Every bottle has a batch number on the label — typically printed at the base. Email [email protected] with that number and we will send the COA that matches your specific lot.
How to store CBD oil in Sunshine Coast
Queensland's climate makes one storage rule more important than elsewhere: keep the oil out of direct light and away from warm spots. The broad practical advice is:
A cool, consistent location. Indoor room temperature — stable, not cycling between warm and cool — is the target. A pantry shelf, a bedroom drawer or a study cupboard all work. A kitchen bench near the stove or kettle, or a spot that gets afternoon sun through a window, is too warm.
Away from direct light. Even through amber glass, persistent direct sunlight adds unnecessary UV exposure. The bottle's dark colour does most of the UV filtering work; the storage spot should not add to its workload.
Cap tightly after every use. Every time the dropper is used without capping immediately, oxygen enters the bottle. Over hundreds of uses across several months, the cumulative exposure is meaningful. Cap it right away.
Store it upright. This keeps the dropper assembly clean and prevents the oil from sitting against the rubber seal for extended periods.
Skip the freezer — room temperature is fine. MCT can temporarily solidify or go hazy below around 10°C, which makes dispensing difficult and introduces unnecessary temperature cycling. It re-liquefies at room temperature without damage to the oil, but the cycle is not worth it when a cupboard works just as well.

Signs the oil has gone off
Even within the shelf life window, it is useful to know the physical indicators of degradation:
Smell change. The most reliable early indicator. A fresh hemp extract in MCT has a clean, earthy, lightly botanical scent. Off oil smells rancid (the carrier) or flat and musty (the terpenes). Either is meaningful.
Colour change. Fresh full-spectrum oil is pale gold to amber. Significant darkening toward brown, or visible particulates that were not there when you opened the bottle, indicates extract degradation.
Persistent room-temperature cloudiness. A brief haziness after the bottle has been cold is MCT temporarily thickening — it clears within minutes at room temperature and is not a concern. Cloudiness that remains at room temperature, especially alongside a smell change, is a different indicator.
These are composition observations, not health claims. An oil that has gone off is simply outside its stated specification — practically, a reason to replace it.
Reading the expiry on the Certificate of Analysis
The COA is one document that covers: manufacture date, test date, cannabinoid profile in milligrams and percentages, and the THC figure. Cross-reference the manufacture date with the current date and you know precisely how much of the shelf life has been used.
Our guide to using CBD oil explains how to read the label and interpret the COA document once it arrives — useful background for anyone buying for the first time, whether you are in Sunshine Coast or elsewhere across QLD. The full-spectrum CBD oil COA is a thorough reference document, including the THC figure — the Therapeutic Goods Administration sets the threshold for THC in Australian hemp-derived products, and the COA confirms it for each specific batch. Once you have your batch number from the label, email [email protected] and we will match it to the corresponding COA.
All orders dispatched to Maroochydore, Caloundra, Noosa, Mooloolaba and across Queensland from CBD Oil Sunshine Coast ship from batch-tested stock, so the matching certificate is always on file.
Common questions about CBD oil shelf life
Does CBD oil expire? Yes. The hemp extract and MCT carrier both degrade with light, heat, time and air. A typical shelf life is 12 to 24 months from manufacture under correct storage. The manufacture date for a specific batch is on its Certificate of Analysis — request it by emailing [email protected] with your batch number.
How do I tell if CBD oil has gone off? Smell it first — rancid or musty instead of earthy and botanical. Then check the colour: significant darkening or persistent cloudiness at room temperature (not brief post-cold haziness) indicates the oil has moved outside its original specification.
What is the best way to store CBD oil in Sunshine Coast? Cool, dark and capped. A cupboard or pantry at consistent room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, with the cap tightened after every use. Not in the freezer. In Sunshine Coast's warm Queensland climate, avoiding warm spots near windows and appliances is the main practical consideration.
Where can I buy fresh-batch hemp oil in Sunshine Coast? From CBD Oil Sunshine Coast online, with delivery across Maroochydore, Caloundra, Noosa, Mooloolaba and QLD. Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis available on request, so you can verify the manufacture date and composition of the specific lot you receive. Browse the full range from $89.95.
Is the shelf life the same across the product range? Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum both carry the 12–24 month guideline. Full-spectrum retains a legal trace of THC under 0.3%; broad-spectrum has no THC. That compositional difference does not materially change the degradation timeline — storage is the dominant variable in both cases.
